Immersive and Participatory Strategies of Performances

Starting from a theoretically grounded exploration of the concepts of participation, immersion, performance, and performativity, we will examine different approaches through which audience members become active participants or experience themselves as part of a condensed atmospheric situation. The aim is to analyze, through concrete artistic positions, how aesthetic, social, and spatial constellations must be shaped in order to generate these effects. Case studies will include, among others, the Danish-Austrian performance collective SIGNA as well as positions from the visual arts.
The seminar combines theoretical reflection with artistic-practical exercises and invites students, at the end, to develop their own concepts for participatory and immersive performances. Its goal is to provide students with an aesthetic and conceptual toolkit that enables them to relate performances and spaces to one another and to design them consciously.
In English and German.
