In terms of numerous aspects of architectural production in Europe, Siza was far ahead of his time with his designs for social housing in Portugal. The idea of affordable housing, community, and sustainable architecture rooted in building traditions characterizes the early work of the Pritzker Prize laureate.

We want to take a closer look at two of his residential projects from the 1970s—Sao Victor and Quinta do Malagueira—and attempt to transform them by incorporating the current discourse on architectural production. Despite their similarities in terms of their serial nature, the projects differ greatly. 

Even back then, São Victor represented an intensive engagement with Porto’s established urban context. Quinta do Malagueira was developed as a new “greenfield” project as part of a larger master plan on the outskirts of Évora. The development also incorporates existing historical elements and translates them into an infrastructural architectural element that strongly shapes the space.

The concept for the interventions will be developed on site from October 18 to October 25, 2026, during a joint field trip, and explored at various scales within the studio.

In Bezug auf zahlreiche Aspekte der Architekturproduktion in Europa war Siza mit den Entwürfen von sozialen Wohnungsbauten in Portugal seiner Zeit weit voraus. Die Idee des bezahlbaren Wohnraums, der Gemeinschaft sowie einer aus einer Bautradition heraus entwickelten, nachhaltigen Architektur prägt das frühe Werk des Pritzkerpreisträgers.

Wir wollen uns zwei seiner Wohnbauprojekte, São Victor und Quinta do Malagueira aus den 1970er Jahren genauer anschauen und versuchen, diese unter Einbeziehung des aktuellen Diskurses zur Architekturproduktion zu transformieren. Trotz ihrer Ähnlichkeit in ihrer Serialität unterscheiden sich die Projekte stark. 

Sao Victor stand schon damals für eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem gewachsenen städtischen Kontext von Porto. Quinta do Malagueira entstand als Neuplanung auf „der grünen Wiese“ im Rahmen eines größeren Bebauungsplans am Rande von Evora. Die Siedlung nimmt ebenfalls vorgefundene historische Elemente  auf und übersetzt diese in ein stark Raumprägendes infrastrukturelles Architekturelement.

Die Idee für die Eingriffe wird vor Ort vom 18.10. bis 25.10.26 während einer gemeinsamen Exkursion entwickelt und in verschiedenen Maßstäben innerhalb des Studios untersucht.
