San Carlo alle Quattro (1646) by Baroque architect Francesco Borromini dominates the viewer's attention with its solid presence and eloquent geometry. This sculptural architecture is composed in such a way that the condition of the original site from which it originates is barely recognizable. The site is rather narrow and marginal, situated on a street corner at a random angle. There is no doubt that this work demonstrates Borromini's remarkable skill and talent in overcoming the limited circumstances of the site. But one could also recognize that it is precisely this problematic site that leads to the brilliant result as a perfectly fitting solution from the limitation.
This seminar focuses on seeing the “limit” not just as a given condition, but as a tool for guidance. Where lies the limit? What are the possibilities within the limit? Can the limit itself be an opening for a new perspective? Is the creative process possible without limits? Could the limit be an inevitable instrument or the very source of inspiration?
Various examples of artistic process will be introduced and discussed, followed by individual research, dialogue, and documentation of the process toward results.
