Bending Rules – Parametric Design with Curved Timber
FWP 2, BD

In this module, you will first learn the fundamentals of parametric modelling with Rhino and Grasshopper through hands-on sessions and focused design exercises. Step by step, you will build up the skills to formulate your design intent and translate it into flexible, rule-based models rather than fixed forms.
With a fluent transition from tools to application, the second part of the course shifts toward the parametric design of curved timber structures – based on a new product that allows to create curved timber panels. Supported by Kai Strehlke of Swiss timber specialist Blumer-Lehmann, we’ll gain insight into what curved cross-laminated timber (CLTcurved) is, how it is fabricated, and how it can be used to design and create novel wooden structures.
The semester culminates in the digital fabrication of your designs at model scale using laser cutting. By physically building your parametric concepts, you’ll explore the matching of computational design and digital fabrication.
