As a society, we are already in the midst of an iconic shift. There is a shift from linguistic to visual information, from words to images and – most disturbingly – from arguments to videos. (Gottfried Boehm)
Today, images are everywhere – including in architecture. Often, images of unbuilt architecture already shape the discourse. At the same time, the production of images is becoming increasingly easy. Artificial intelligence is changing this field and placing new demands on how we deal with images. What used to be exclusive to professionals can now be created by almost any amateur.
In order to be convincing in today's flood of images, architectural images must be more precise, more conscious and more interesting. This requires an understanding of how images are constructed, how they direct attention and what messages they convey. The basics for this are image composition, dramaturgy, technical knowledge and the confident use of new technologies.
In the course, we begin by collecting and analysing references from various fields such as art, theatre, film, photography and graphic design, which serve as the basis for our own image production. Building on this, students design three detailed architectural fragments and translate them into an image.
Blender is taught as a practical tool with which students can quickly create their own visualisations. In addition, the course covers AI-based image generation, including its possibilities, working methods, and strategies for achieving controlled results.
This course will be held in English.
