Kyaninga Child Development Centre, or KCDC for short, is an organisation based in western Uganda that offers a comprehensive range of services for the therapy and education of children with disabilities. Since 2019, there has been a partnership between KCDC and the Munich-based organisation "Bauen für Orangefarm" with the aim of planning and building a new children's therapy centre together with students. Over the past three years, the initial outline of the planning has been developed in the form of workshops and teaching assignments at TUM and HM. In summer 2022 and spring 2024, the foundation was laid for further work in the form of construction phases with students from Uganda and Germany.
The course will take place in an interdisciplinary collaboration between architects and civil engineers. The seminar is divided into three phases: research, design and elaboration. We aim to produce the necessary planning and construction documents by the end of the semester for a further construction phase of the project during the semester break, anticipated in August and September. The work will focus on planning the first buildings of an inclusive school.
The guiding principle of the seminar is "Appropriate Approaches". Therefore, the seminar will not only deal with construction topics, such as the appropriate selection and use of building materials but also with topics such as the social and cultural integration of such student construction projects, ecological sustainability and the cultural and knowledge transfer in an international/intercultural context.
The seminar is organised in close cooperation with our local project partners, the clients "KCDC", the Ugandan Martyr University, with whom we will continue to build the project, and our supporting architecture and engineering offices in Uganda.
