Urban Mapping

In this seminar, we will delve into the topic of urban mapping as a way of making urban phenomena visible. We will 'map' various aspects that make up a city. We will experiment a lot, both with the topics we address in this context, and with the ways to represent, make readable, and therefore communicate these aspects.

Crucially, we will consider what kind of illustration, but also what kind of data collection or approach to the topic best suits the chosen focus. By drawing very different answers to these questions – namely, what kind of illustration and what kind of data collection best suits the chosen focus – and by comparing these answers, we will learn that maps are much more than a depiction of objective reality; they always reflect the interpretation of a place by their author.

At the end of the course, the results will be summarised in a publication created using the faculty's server-based publication system.

In diesem Seminar tauchen wir ein in das Thema des Urban Mapping als Möglichkeit des Sichtbarmachens von städtischen Phänomenen. Wir werden verschiedene Aspekte, die eine Stadt ausmachen, ‚mappen‘. Dabei werden wir viel experimentieren, und zwar zum einen mit den Themen, mit denen wir uns in diesem Zusammenhang beschäftigen, und zum anderen mit den Möglichkeiten, diese Aspekte darzustellen, lesbar zu machen, und dadurch zu vermitteln.

Entscheidend in diesem Zusammenhang wird sein, sich zu überlegen, welche Art der Darstellung, aber auch welche Art der Datensammlung oder der Annäherung an das Thema dem gewählten Fokus am besten entspricht. Durch das Zeichnen ganz unterschiedlicher Antworten auf diese Fragen – also welche Art der Darstellung, und welche Art der Datensammlung – dem gewählten Fokus am besten entspricht und durch das Vergleichen dieser Antworten lernen wir, dass maps viel mehr sind als die Darstellung der objektiven Realität, sondern immer auch die Lesart eines Ortes durch ihre Autorin oder ihren Autor widerspiegeln.

Am Ende des Kurses werden die Ergebnisse in einer Publikation zusammengefasst, die im fakultätseigenen, server-basierten Publikationssystem erstellt wird.
