In a world saturated with images, what you see is not always what you get. But is this a problem? Perhaps instead it could be an opportunity to indulge in a visual technique and culture of composition, sequencing and storytelling such as the triptych. There was a time when a photograph could be used as evidence to prove or disprove a crime. The idea that an image might act as tool for factual confirmation, however, is long gone. In a strange way, we are today more suspicious of forms of visual representation than ever before. Often we are even happy to be fooled, lead down the rabbit hole, tricked into a seductive vision of the unreal – or rather the hyper real.
In this course we will work with photography, image-making and visual manipulation tools to create a triptych: a representational format used in early Christian art for altar paintings, which became increasingly popular from the Middle Ages onwards. For this all you need is a phone to take pictures and the ability (or will) to explore the capabilities, limitations and possibilities of photo-manipulation software. There will be no defined technical or skills-based tutoring, but rather the course will operate according to the belief that any given individual can operate and acquire the tools that are needed and available for the unique endeavour they might pursue.
We will meet weekly, or sometimes every other week, to discuss your work but also to look at examples and references. The final output will be a printed submission and a digital file. This course will be held in English.
