Excursion: Walking Venice

Venice is a city of exceptional historical and architectural significance, defined by its unique urban structure and fragile material conditions. In 2025, the Architecture Biennale will once again position the city as a global platform for contemporary architectural discourse. The Biennale, together with the city itself, provides a critical framework to examine questions of history, transformation, and architectural practice.

Over four days, we will explore Venice through walking and by boat. The program includes visits to the Biennale, the Lido beaches, as well as selected works by Carlo Scarpa, whose interventions into historic fabric remain exemplary studies in precision, materiality, and context. Through these tours we will encounter the city’s layered infrastructures, its intersections of permanence and impermanence, and its ongoing negotiation between heritage and modernity.

The excursion takes place from the 21st to the 25th of October. Participants are asked to bring a sketchbook, a pencil, your swimwear, and some curiosity.

This module can only be chosen in combination with the module “Theory and History of Architecture – Academic Work” (Key Competence 4, Nr. I and II/Part 1) by Prof. Dr. Karl R. Kegler.
